Adam Cornell is out front and in command of the Bertil Roos Racing School Winter Series point standings halfway through the season.
Following his sweep of the series’ most recent Group 2 races at Palm Beach International Raceway, the talented Pennsylvania teenager is a perfect 4-for-4 on the season. He now holds a 97-83 lead over Phillip Jasper in the driver standings with Gabe Jasper in third at 81 points.
Cornell led flag to flag to capture the first Group 2 race on PBIR’s 2.2-mile road course back in December. The action was behind him in the battle for second place, as Kirk Weatherman and Phillip Jasper swapped the position four times with Weatherman making the final pass with one lap to go.
Phillip Jasper started from the pole position in the second race and pulled out to a lead over Cornell. On Lap 4, Jimmy Dai passed Cornell for the runner-up spot and set his sights on the lead. One lap later in a furious fight up front, Cornell emerged with the top spot and Dai wound up second.
Weatherman moved to third while Phillip Jasper fell to fourth and the positions remained unchanged the rest of the way.
There was plenty of action in the Group 1 races as well.
Gabe Jasper also scored a flag-to-flag victory in the first race, while the battle for the runner-up spot provided the real excitement. Gary Vizoli passed Matt Curry for second on Lap 8, only to see Curry retake the position two laps later and hold on to the spot the rest of the race.
Curry continued his strong performance in the second race. He overtook Gabe Jasper for the lead on Lap 4, and Vizoli followed him into second place. Gabe Jasper kept battling, but went off track four laps later, rejoining the fray in fifth place.
One lap later, Vizoli made the winning pass of Curry for his first career win.
The Bertil Roos Racing School Winter Series returns to action Jan. 18-19 at Palm Beach International Raceway.
