IndyCar display panels still on hold
The Verizon IndyCar Series will forego the use of its onboard display panels for a few more rounds. RACER has learned the earliest return for the dynamic LED units would be the Road America round over the June 22-24 weekend, but a push into July at Iowa or Toronto is also known to be a fallback option.
The new panels, supplied by SPAA05 in Holland, made for a nice upgrade at the start of the season, but intermittent problems were visible as some cars raced without the units functioning as expected. During the Indy 500 Open Test in April, consistent and damaging harmonic vibrations were experienced while lapping the 2.5-mile oval.
The vibrations caused numerous failures within the panels as electrical connections were broken, and with the problem identified, the units were reclaimed by the series and sent back to SPAA05 for repairs and updates to prevent future harmonic damage.
