Dakar video: American hopeful Menzies out after crash

American Dakar Rally rookie and Lucas Oil Off Road Racing series driver Bryce Menzies is officially out of the rally after a heavy Stage 2 crash. Menzies was not hurt, but X-raid Team co-driver Peter Mortensen sustained a broken ankle when their Mini hit a bump – which was an expected caution point that still led to several barrel rolls – in the fourth mile of the 166-mile second stage.

"[Pete] called it out as a big caution and I looked at it and just thought it was a little kicker and just hit it way too fast and went end over end," a shocked Menzies told the Dakar Rally video team. "Huge bummer, first Dakar, second day and we're done."

Team Peugeot's Stephane Peterhansel continues to lead in the car class after the third stage, but Toyota's Nasser Al-Attiyah

closed the gap

by winning Monday's stage.
