Furniture Row drops second car for 2018

Furniture Row Racing confirmed the inevitable on Wednesday afternoon in a statement from team owner Barney Visser:

"As Furniture Row Racing looks ahead to the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series season, the Denver, Colo. based team is not planning to field the No. 77 Toyota as a second car entry. It is our organization's goal to operate a two-car team in the future, and we will continue to seek sponsorship funding for the No. 77. Our 100 percent focus next season will be on the No. 78 Toyota Camry, which will be driven by Martin Truex Jr."

FRR had expanded to two cars this season, taking on rookie Erik Jones. In 30 starts this season, Jones has amassed 12 top 10 and four top-five finishes, one pole with 310 laps led. He is 19th in points. However, Jones is a Joe Gibbs Racing driver and is headed in-house to JGR next year to drive the No. 20.

It has put FRR in a tough spot because regardless of having driver interest, Visser had continuing expressed worries about finding funding to keep the No. 77 going. Four weeks ago, Visser revealed the charter for the car had been sold and team president Joe Garone also said the team was

headed for a shutdown

unless money was dumped on them.

Being a single-car team is not out of the norm for FRR, however. Until this year, the organization had fielded one entry since 2005.
