Ricciardo eyeing Singapore win after Monza charge

Daniel Ricciardo admits he is targeting victory in next weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix after his charge through the field in Italy.

Last weekend at Monza, Red Bull – not expecting to be overly competitive on its long straights – took a number of power unit penalties to ensure it wouldn't be disadvantaged in Singapore. Following an impressive drive from 16th on the grid to finish fourth, when asked if the Marina Bay street circuit represents a good chance of a podium, Ricciardo replied: "Yes, definitely.

"We definitely have to try and target a podium, but deep down we are all targeting another victory. That is the plan. It has been a good circuit for me in the past, so we will go there with some good momentum, and do what we can to try steal a top step from a Mercedes or a Ferrari."

Having started the season off the pace of Ferrari and Mercedes due to correlation problems between Red Bull's development tools and the track, Ricciardo admits the starting point somewhat taints the impressiveness of the team's improvement during the year.

"It seems like every year we have a rebirth. Unfortunately we don't start as quick as we want to. Even Monza, we always say it is a weak circuit, but we tend to have really good races there. Even though we are not on the podium but we had good pace.

"If we are having a rebirth, Singapore will be a big action for us, hopefully we have a big baby there in terms of a trophy."

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner agrees that Singapore should be better for the characteristics of the RB13, with Ricciardo having finished less than half a second behind race winner Nico Rosberg last season.

"I think Singapore is a track that hopefully should suit our strengths," Horner said. "It's a bit more engine-dependent than somewhere like Hungary or Monaco for example. But it's a long lap there, lots of corners, bumpy street circuit. We've always gone well in the past and I hope that'll be the case this year."
