Brazil, Mexico among possibilities for WEC in 2019
the new calendar
for February 2019 could be."It will be a calendar with many races," he said, when asked to explain the new "Super Season" to the international TV audience. "Two in Asia, two in Europe and two in America or South America."
This counts out other potential options in the Gulf region, or Asia. A return to Circuit of The Americas for a sixth consecutive year seems highly unlikely, too.
It leaves open though, the prospect for a potential return to the now refurbished Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo, Brazil for the first time since the 2014 season finale, or to Mexico City, for the final year of the circuit's current three-year contract.
WEC paddock reacts to 'Super Season' move
The 6 Hours of Mexico's promoter, Ricardo Gonzalez, confirmed to RACER last week that he was still in talks to hold another race in Mexico, just before the calendar was announced.
"The deal is for three years to run this race (next year is the final in the current contract)," he said. "But every year we can revise the contract. I still have some meetings with the WEC and sponsors to understand what's going to happen next year. We're going to have news today about what's happening. But I'm still waiting to know more.
"For sure we want this to continue, but there's a lot of things that have to glue together in order for it to happen."
With a major concentration from the FIA WEC of reducing freight costs, the favored options are clearly for surface freight (land or sea) over the much more expensive airborne option.
Originally, the to-be-announced event was a January race, before being moved to February after consultation with the teams. The seaborne transit from Sao Paulo to Florida – for the round at Sebring in March – is approximately three weeks, effectively giving a two-week window at the start of February, if Interlagos is the choice.
