Truex says crew incident 'shows their passion'

Martin Truex Jr. said his team will move on the best it can after

two of his crew members were suspended

this week.

Starting this weekend at Pocono Raceway, Truex will be without his front and rear tire changer. Lee Cunningham and Chris Taylor were suspended for three weeks after an altercation with Joe Gibbs Racing crew chief Adam Stevens at Indianapolis. Gibbs handed down the punishment, as it provides the pit crews for its technical partner.

"We've been working together for a year and a half and things have gone really well," Truex said of both organizations. "This is just a bump in the road. Lot of good people involved, lot of smart people.

"We'll get it all figured out. It's not a big deal."

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series points leader reiterated multiple times that he made a mistake while racing Kyle Busch into Turn 1 on Lap 112 of the Brickyard 400. Truex said he has hated how the incident has blown up, but he doesn't believe it will tarnish the relationship between the companies.

And if his team did anything wrong, Truex said he didn't think so.

"Obviously, you never want to see confrontation, but I think it shows their passion for what they're doing, it shows their passion for our team," Truex said. "Honestly, I didn't even see the incident so I'm shooting in the dark here. I literally left the racetrack and haven't looked at anything all week. Just proud of our guys and we'll get through it."

Although he hasn't seen the video capturing Stevens and his crewmembers in a heated exchange, Truex said he has talked to Busch.

"Things are fine. I talked to Kyle on Monday morning, or Monday afternoon I guess it was," he said. "We're fine. It's a racing deal. Neither of us want to see that happen. We race really hard, we're both up front a lot.

"We've restarted next to each other on the front row 15-plus times this year, probably, and never had an issue. Just one of those deals. We were racing hard, we both wanted to win that race and I made a mistake. I think he understands."

Now in a tough situation as he looks to end the regular season as the points leader and bank an additional 15 playoff points, Truex said there is no denying the suspensions have a big impact.

"Our pit crew has been amazing this year putting us in position to win multiple races [and] not making mistakes, they have everything," Truex said.

"Those two guys are unbelievable at what they do. So, we're obviously at a disadvantage without them."
