Sauber, Ferrari sign multi-year engine deal

Sauber has signed a multi-year agreement to continue using Scuderia Ferrari power units less than a day after

canceling its planned power unit deal

with Honda. The team, which ran a year-old Ferrari spec engine this season, will get the 2018 power unit next season.

The Sauber-Honda partnership was announced during the Russian Grand Prix weekend in April, with Sauber set to be the first team other than McLaren to use a Honda since the Japanese manufacturer's return to Formula 1 in 2015. However, the June departure of Sauber team principal Monisha Kaltenborn – who had been instrumental in the deal – threw the plan into doubt.

"Things move forward quite fast in our world," Sauber F1 team principal Frederic Vasseur said Friday. "And I think that the situation was a bit unclear also regarding the collaboration between McLaren and Honda, and on our side the engine supplier had to find a solution for the gearbox. We had a deal with McLaren and the situation was a bit more complicated. On the other end, the collaboration with Ferrari is based on a long-term relationship and we had the opportunity to discuss with Ferrari to get the new-spec engine and I think it was a good choice and we found a mutual agreement with Honda to stop the collaboration.”

There had also been the possibility of a switch to Mercedes power, as Vasseur has a relationship with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff and the team has links with Mercedes as a result of Sauber running Pascal Wehrlein in 2017.

Ferrari was only due to supply Haas in 2018; Mercedes also supplies Williams and Force India, and Renault has customers in Red Bull and Toro Rosso.
