Hendrick non-committal on Kahne's future

As far as Rick Hendrick's concerned, Kasey Kahne's future involves being in the NASCAR playoffs after

winning Sunday's Brickyard 400

. But his future beyond this season is still to be determined.

"Our plans are not set for the 5 car. ... We hadn't made any plans yet," Hendrick said Sunday night when asked if Kahne would be the driver of the car next year. "There's nothing concrete or done."

Earlier in the day during a press conference, Hendrick didn't want to talk about the No. 5 car, saying that was "for another day." And as far as development driver William Byron getting into a Cup car next year, Hendrick said the organization wasn't ready to cross that bridge.

Speculation, however, has run rampant in the NASCAR garage for months that Kahne could be out of a job. Entering Sunday's race, Kahne had been winless since 2014, which was also the last year he's made the post-season.

Not helping matters in the conversation is two of his major sponsors, Great Clips and Farmers Insurance, are leaving at season's end.

"We'll see how things shake out, you know, the rest of the year," continued Hendrick. "There's a lot of things involved, sponsors and a lot of things we look at. We're going to try hard. But there's no decisions made at this time."

Kahne is signed with Hendrick Motorsports through next season.
