Truex hopes Furniture Row keeps second car in '18

Furniture Row Racing has not decided what will become of its No. 77 car for next year, but Martin Truex Jr. hopes the organization remains a two-car operation.

The current team landscape centers around Truex and rookie Erik Jones, who drives the No. 77. The team was built for Jones this season, but

he will go to Joe Gibbs Racing next year

to replace Matt Kenseth in the No. 20 Camry.

Truex, who has been the leader of Furniture Row since 2014, is just as interested as the rest of the garage to see what happens.

"I'll leave that up to Barney (Visser, team owner) and Joe (Garone, team president) and everybody that runs the show," Truex said about the importance of running two cars. "Our team has been incredible – it's been awesome to be a part of it. It was exciting going to two cars and I know it was something that Barney has thought about and talked about for a long time and I know his plans originally were not for this (77) team to be a one-year deal.

"We'll just have to see how it all pans out, but I've enjoyed working with Erik."

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series point leader was very complimentary of his young counterpart. Calling Jones a good teammate and great kid, the team, led by crew chief Chris Gayle, has continued to improve as the season progresses.

"Love talking to him and hearing his point of view and things, so it would have been nice to have him for a couple years," Truex said. "But we'll just have to see how it all pans out, and hopefully, we'll be two cars, but I guess you never know."

With Jones moving on, there has been nothing "concrete to report" from the team.

The good news for Truex is he doesn't believe his No. 78 team, which has won three races and leads the points, would be affected if he was the lone ranger once again.

"We've got a really, really tight group of guys that have done a good job working together the last few years and have a lot of trust and confidence in each other," Truex said. "And I think one of the strongest parts of our team is just everybody doing their own jobs and understanding what they are and doing them really well.

"I don't see anything changing. I'm sure there'll be more guys at the shop, they'll do something different there if they go to one car, but we'll just have to wait and see, honestly."

Truex will start second in Sunday's Overton’s 301 at New Hampshire.
