Carpenter cracks 224 mph in final Texas practice

Ed Carpenter closed a busy Friday at Texas Motor Speedway with the fastest lap of the event as the owner/driver became the first person to crack the 224 mph barrier. Carpenter spent most of the 30-minute practice session in a large pack as the field worked on their cars while lapping in a draft, and once it was over, the 2014 Texas race winner held the top spot (224.682 mph) in his Chevy-powered entry.

Carpenter, who will start Saturday night's race from 14th on the grid, was followed by front-row starter Scott Dixon in his Chip Ganassi Racing Honda (223.008 mph), Andretti Autosport's Alexander Rossi (222.678 mph), ECR teammate JR Hildebrand (222.303 mph), and a pair of Team Penske drivers in Simon Pagenaud (222.197 mph) and Helio Castroneves (222.072 mph).

After CGR's Dixon led the first practice session and

teammate Charlie Kimball qualified on pole

as Honda took the top eight starting positions, the rise of Chevy with its drivers taking first, fourth, fifth and six in the final practice session could make the 248-lap event more even than anticipated.
