Biaggi suffers injuries in Rome training crash

Former World Superbike champion Max Biaggi suffered severe but non-life-threatening injuries while training near Rome for Sunday's International Supermoto.

The 45-year-old was conscious after the accident and taken by helicopter from the Circuito Internazionale di Latina (Il Sagittario) to a hospital with multiple injuries including a broken shoulder, the UK's The Guardian, citing Italian media reports. Britain's Motorcycle News reports he was training on a supermoto bike, which he races regularly at the Latina track and in Monaco.

Biaggi, who retired from full-time racing at the end of 2012, moved into team ownership with Mahindra in 2016. The 45-year-old announced that he will field a factory-supported Max Racing Mahindra team in the Campionato Italiano Velocitá (CIV), and selected races in the FIM CEV Repsol Moto3 Junior World Championship, with the hope of eventually moving into the world championship.

"Last year I was still doing some racing, at 44 [ED: as an Aprilia wild card in SBK], and after 20 years as a professional rider, I now want to think big and not work with a team but have a team of my own," he said in December.

In 2013, former grand prix motorcycle racer Doriano Romboni was killed at the Sagittario track in a supermoto accident held in memory of Marco Simoncelli. The 44-year-old was struck by another rider after crashing during a practice session.
