Raikkonen claims Monaco pole in thrilling qualifying

Kimi Raikkonen secured his first pole position since 2008 as Ferrari locked out the front row in a thrilling qualifying session at the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Finn beat teammate Sebastian Vettel by just 0.043s with an excellent performance throughout Q3 to take pole for the first time since the 2008 French Grand Prix. Vettel edged out Valtteri Bottas by a tiny margin, with 0.002s between the two as Bottas delivered an excellent final lap, while teammate Lewis Hamilton made a shock exit in Q2. Hamilton will start from 13th place and face a real struggle to score any points from so far back, with overtaking notoriously difficult in Monaco.

Red Bull looked a threat throughout the first two parts of qualifying but faded in the battle for pole, with Max Verstappen finishing 0.318s adrift of Raikkonen in fourth place, with Daniel Ricciardo half a second further back in fifth. Carlos Sainz excelled in sixth place for Toro Rosso ahead of Sergio Perez, Romain Grosjean, Jenson Button and Stoffel Vandoorne.

McLaren had both drivers in Q3 but has little to celebrate,

with Button receiving a 15-place grid penalty

for power unit component changes and Vandoorne crashing at the end of Q2, while he'll also take a three-place grid penalty for hitting Felipe Massa in Spain.

Hamilton was clearly struggling from the start of Q2, saving a big moment at Massenet and just keeping his Mercedes out of the wall. While Hamilton gestured with his hand to suggest he knew what an impressive save it was, it showed how uncomfortable with the car he was and he pit for setup adjustments.

Upon his return, Hamilton struggled to put a clean lap together and kept backing off, before his final attempt was ruined by Vandoorne crashing at the exit of the Swimming Pool. The Belgian had been impressive all day and was sitting seventh overall but clipped the inside barrier at the second part of the complex and broke his front right suspension, launching him over the curbs and into the wall.

The incident ironically secured both Vandoorne's and Button's places in Q3, with Daniil Kvyat, Nico Hulkenberg, Kevin Magnussen, Hamilton and Massa all dropping out.

After a late crash in the final practice session, Esteban Ocon missed out on the first half of Q1 while Force India repaired his car, emerging from the garage with 10 minutes remaining. While some drivers completed as many as 14 laps in order to progress, with the tires improving with every lap, Ocon's limited running ultimately cost him as he pit when sitting 15th and was knocked out by Grosjean's final flying effort.

Jolyon Palmer also dropped out after complaining he was struggling with understeer, ending up 0.9s slower than teammate Hulkenberg in the first part of qualifying. Lance Stroll – who had his running cut short by a hydraulic leak – Pascal Wehrlein and Marcus Ericsson were the other three drivers to be eliminated, with Ericsson unable to complete his final flying lap as he touched the wall. The Swede hit the barrier on the inside of the first part of the Nouvelle Chicane, damaging his left-rear wheel and having to stop his Sauber in a run-off area.
