Chaves leads overcast final 500 practice
It was cool and overcast Saturday morning in the final practice session before qualifying for the 101st Indianapolis 500, but the air was thick and the speeds were much slower than anticipated.
Only eight drivers took to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for 51 laps and only one car from the Andretti, Ganassi and Penske stables ventured out during the 90-minute period.
Gabby Chaves, driving for the newly-formed Harding Racing, posted the fastest lap of 228.160mph in his Chevy – the quickest he's been all month.
Graham Rahal, in the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Honda, was close behind at 228.007mph and ran a four-lap qualifying simulation just under a 228 average – two mph slower than his best lap on Friday.
Conor Daly managed 225.080mph and teammate Carlos Munoz 224.632mph in A.J. Foyt's Chevys, while Jack Harvey, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Sage Karam and Buddy Lazier also made a few laps.
Qualifying is set for 11 a.m. ET.
