Lynn closes on full-season WEC LMP2 drive

GP2 race winner Alex Lynn looks to be closing in on a full season of FIA World Endurance Championship racing with the G-Drive Racing squad in its new ORECA 07 Gibson.

Testing this week with the team at Motorland Aragon in Spain, Lynn would only confirm that the team would make a final decision at the end of the week long test as to whether he would be confirmed alongside Roman Rusinov and Pierre Thiriet for the season. He is thought to be the only other driver testing with the team this week.

The test in the LMP2 spec ORECA means that Lynn is one of very few drivers who have sampled both the IMSA DPi version of the 2017 LMP2 family he has tested with the Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R ahead of

joining the Rolex 24 at Daytona-winning team for the Sebring and Petit Le Mans enduros

), and the FIA WEC Gibson-engined version.

Lunn's first comparison, though, was made with last year's Nissan V8-engined ORECA which he drive in the FIA WEC with Manor.

"It simply feels like a different class of car, a different level of flying! A big step up in terms of downforce, power, tire grip  everything. A very impressive machine.

"Comparing it to the DPi is trickier because the tire regulations are very different between IMSA and the WEC. The tire performance from Dunlop is what brings this new LMP2 into another level for LMP2 in the WEC.

Lynn did compare the new LMP2 favorably with his 2016 GP2 car, however.

"The downforce in the P2 car is massive and you have to be massively on your game to be one of the quickest drivers in this classm" he said. "That excites me, to come straight out of single-seaters and jump into cars like the Cadillac and this new ORECA, it's everything that you've built up your skill set for coming up through the single-seater ranks. The same driving technique applies."

The FIA WEC pre-season Prologue test takes place at Monza on April 1-2.
