WRC: Spectator killed in Rallye Monte-Carlo's first stage
A spectator was killed during the first stage of the World Rally Championship season-opening Rallye Monte-Carlo when driver Hayden Paddon rolled his Hyundai I20 coupe off a left-hand bend toward the end of the Entrevaux-Ubraye route.
Paddon and co-driver John Kennard were uninjured after hitting a patch of black ice at the turn, which turned the car sideways. But the rear end of the car slid around to the right and hit the mountainside, where several spectators appeared to be standing. Hyundai Motorsport said in a statement that the fan incident occurred "at the same time as the No. 4 Hyundai i20 coupe WRC of Hayden Paddon and John Kennard crashed into the mountainside." Reports emerged that a person was involved in the accident, and emergency services were called to assist the spectator.
With Haddon's car blocking the road, organizers stopped the stage before canceling the remainder.
The Automobile Club de Monaco released a statement confirming the spectator's death.
"The Automobile Club de Monaco regrets to advise further details following incident of the car #4 (Paddon/Kennard) in SS 1. The spectator was transported by helicopter from the stage to hospital in Nice. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, the spectator has sadly died.
"An investigation has commenced into the incident and all involved parties will provide assistance to the authorities. Everyone associated with the event extends their deepest sympathies and condolences to the families, friends and individuals affected."
Paddon took to social media after the race to explain that the car snapped sideways, "and then we were a passenger."
"I am incredibly saddened by today's accident and my thoughts are with the family and friends of the person involved," he said a few hours later after learning of the spectator's death. "It's difficult to say much more at the moment as we are in shock with what has happened. I'm sorry for the family, the fans & our sport."
Hyundai Motorsport has withdrawn from the event, saying in a statement that they were deeply saddened and "as a mark of respect for the spectator who sadly passed away tonight."
