MOTOGP: Pedrosa undergoes surgery on Motegi injuries

Dani Pedrosa has undergone surgery on the collarbone he fractured in a crash during practice for MotoGP's Japanese Grand Prix.

The Honda rider had a massive accident during Friday afternoon's second session, and flew from Japan back to Spain that night. He underwent surgery on Saturday evening at Barcelona's Hospital Universitari Dexeus, to have a plate set on a collarbone that was broken in four places. Doctors also identified a fracture in his right fibula.

"Through the use of a CAT scan, it was confirmed that patient Dani Pedrosa had suffered a comminuted fracture consisting of four fragments, with significant shortening of the middle third of the right clavicle," Victor Marlet and Sergi Barrera, who oversaw the surgery, explained.

"The scan also detected a supcapital fracture of the right fibula with no displacement, only requiring immobilization. A surgical operation was carried out on the right clavicle, involving its open reduction and fixation with a titanium plate.

"The result of the operation was satisfactory, and Dani Pedrosa will undergo an evaluation of his progress over the coming days."

The injured Spaniard was replaced by Honda test rider Hiroshi Aoyama at Motegi, the Japanese rider taking the final point by finishing in 15th place, as team-mate Marc Marquez won the race and secured the title.

Pedrosa is considered unlikely to return for the remaining two flyaway races in Australia and Malaysia.
