NASCAR: Newman calls out Stewart after Richmond

Ryan Newman directed a series of scathing comments to Tony Stewart on Saturday night after both veterans were involved in an incident in the closing laps of the

NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Richmond International Raceway

(see video below).

The incident occurred on lap 363 and began when Newman dived under the three-time Sprint Cup champion. They stayed side-by-side on the backstretch before Stewart appeared to cut down on Newman, triggering a multi-car crash that also caught up Carl Edwards, David Ragan, Brian Scott and Chris Buescher.

Newman didn't hold back.

"I guess he thought he was in a sprint car again," Newman said on the NBCSN television broadcast. "Didn't want to control his anger. We'll keep fighting like we always do. It's unfortunate. Not the end we wanted. It's just disappointing that you have somebody old like that that should be retired the way he drives. It's just ridiculous.

"I don't think there was any reason other than him just being bipolar and having anger issues. Google Tony Stewart, you'll see all kinds of things he's done. Look it up on YouTube, everything else."

It was an apparent reference to the sprint car incident in 2013 at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in which Stewart struck and killed Kevin Ward Jr., a 20-year-old racer whom climbed out of his car and walked down the banking under caution in the attempt to confront the NASCAR superstar.

A grand jury did not indict Stewart on criminal charges. A toxicology report revealed that Ward had marijuana in his system.

Newman drove for Stewart Haas Racing from 2009-'13. Stewart is a co-owner of the team alongside Gene Haas.

Stewart gave as good as he got. Asked after the race for his reaction to Newman's implication that Stewart's cut across his nose was intentional, he readily admitted it.

"He was right," Stewart said. "That was the third time he'd driven into me during the night, and how many times does a guy get a free pass until you've had enough of it? He's got to do his part racing for a championship, too, and to race to get in there, and if you're going to run into guys -- I go into (Turn) 1 and he dive bombs in there. I'm already coming down, so it's not like I was trying to squeeze him in the infield or something. Ryan and I have been good friends. I don't do that to him. But he hits me in one, he hits me off of 2, and it's like the third time by that time. There was once early in the race that nobody saw. Three times, that's two more times than I normally let somebody run into me.

And, his reaction for Newman's suggestion that Stewart should be retired already?

"He'll get his wish in 10 weeks. He'll get his wish," Stewart declared. "Maybe next year without us here, he'll get his spot in the Chase that way. He's a guy that can get in here, and he's going to win a championship before it's all said and done.

"This night didn't dictate it for him. There were 26 weeks to get you to the Chase, so tonight wasn't a make or break for him. The 25 weeks before that set the tone for tonight and it made it stressful for him and he was trying to make it happen, but you can't just plow through guys and knock guys out of the way to get there and expect to make it."
