INDYCAR: Dixon even faster in Watkins Glen FP3

Target Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon has yet to relinquish the top spot through three practice sessions at Watkins Glen, and in another continuing trend, the four-time IndyCar champion continued his assault on the track by moving 5.3314 seconds below the record set in 2009.

Dixon's 1m22.8008s was an improvement on the 1m22.8740 he turned late Friday at the repaved road course, and when compared to Ryan Briscoe's 1m28.1322 from 2009, the shocking speeds on display are bordering on cartoonish.

The New Zealander was joined in the 1m22s club for the first time by Team Penske's Will Power (-0.0538), KVSH Racing's Sebastien Bourdais (-0.1484) from the Chevy stable and, in an encouraging sign for Honda, James Hinchcliffe (-0.1789) also joined the group. Fellow Honda driver Jack Hawksworth continued with Friday's impressive form to complete the top five (-0.2197) in his AJ Foyt Racing entry.

Two red flags brought pauses to the 45-minute session. Ed Carpenter Racing's Josef Newgarden had the back of his No. 21 Chevy slide in the Boot which led to the rear wing structure being mangled. Despite the car's rough appearance after the crash, the Tennessean was unhurt and was soon back in the pits. Foyt's Takuma Sato also managed a half-spin before coming to a rest. He was quickly refired by the Holmatro Safety Team and sent on his way.
