WTCC: Lopez wins main race on home soil

Jose Maria Lopez ended a five race win drought with a home victory in the main race of the World Touring Car Championship in Argentina.

Despite losing the lead to Norbert Mischelisz at the start, reigning champion and local hero Lopez took the chequered flag comfortably after regaining the position in the latter half of the race.

Lopez was part of a hotly contested battle for second with Citroen teammate Muller for much of the race as the pair chased down Mischelisz, before the world champion was able to benefit from Mischelisz and Muller both running wide and removing themselves from the fight for victory.

Tom Coronel took second place, ahead of Rob Huff in third – but both were under investigation for possible jump-starts when the race ended. In fourth was Tiago Monteiro, with Muller eventually finishing in fifth.

Debutant Esteban Gurrieri took sixth place, overcoming a gearbox problem that had caused him to retire from the opening race. Medhi Bennani took seventh place ahead of Mischelisz who came home in a lowly eighth.

Winner of the opening race Tom Chilton and John Filippi were ninth and 10th, respectively.
