F1: Ericsson sent to hospital for checks

Sauber driver Marcus Ericsson has been sent to hospital for checks following a heavy crash in final Formula 1 practice ahead of the British Grand Prix.

Ericsson lost control of his car on the exit of Stowe corner, spinning across the track into the inside tyre barrier at high speed. His car was heavily damaged in the accident, which was violent enough to knock the steering wheel off in the impact.

Ericsson climbed out of the car and was taken to the circuit medical center, and following examination by FIA doctors he was sent to hospital in Oxford for what Sauber called "routine check-ups," which will include a CT scan.

The team is also evaluating if it can have Ericsson's car fixed in time for qualifying due to a lack of parts.

Sauber's financial struggles this year have forced it to miss both in-season F1 tests this season, with "cost effectiveness" given as its reason for skipping next week's Silverstone test.
