INDYCAR: Series to help cover Boston refunds

IndyCar will contribute more than $900,000 toward helping refund fans who purchased tickets for the ill-fated Boston Grand Prix.

The company that was formed to manage and promote the race filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy

earlier this week

. Bankruptcy documents showed that almost $1.7m had been spent on tickets for the race, which was cancelled in April. Boston GP had signed a four-year deal to run the event, with the inaugural race scheduled for this year's Labor Day weekend.

"Stepping into the breach left by promoter Boston Grand Prix – when it failed to fully refund ticket purchases after the cancellation of its planned race – IndyCar announced today it would contribute $925,000 to help make fans whole," said a statement from the series.

The move was praised by Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healy.

"I appreciate IndyCar's willingness to step up for their fans and help resolve this problem," she said. "They've gone above and beyond to be a productive part of this solution and fans will reap the benefits."

Attorney General Healy's office has filed a suit against Boston Grand Prix and its CEO John Casey to pursue the remainder of the refunds owed to ticket purchasers.

Ticket holders that are entitled to a refund have been asked to contact the Attorney General's consumer protection hotline at (617) 727 8400.
