SUPERCARS: McLaughlin to join Penske in 2017

By

Scott McLaughlin, a 23-year-old up-and-comer in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, will join DJR Team Penske in 2017 to drive the No. 17 DJR Team Penske Ford, the storied organization has announced.

McLaughlin, currently ranked third in the Supercars Championship, has eight wins, 17 poles and 22 podium results in his fourth year in the series, finishing in the top 10 in the championship standings in each. He joins Fabian Coulthard in a two-car effort in 2017.

“We have watched Scott closely over the last few seasons and have admired his talent and his ability to get the best results out of his car week in and week out,” Roger Penske said. “As we continue raise the level of performance at DJR Team Penske we believe he will be a key addition to our team on and off the track.”

In 2010, the Christchurch, New Zealand, native became the youngest to race a V8 Supercar when he competed in the championship’s development category, the Dunlop Series, at the age of 16. Two years later, he won both the Dunlop Series with Stone Brothers Racing and New Zealand’s V8 SuperTourer Series championship.

In his first full-time ride in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship in 2013, he won twice and picked up rookie of the year honors for his 10th-place finish in the standings. In 2014, he doubled his win total to four, earned 10 podiums and 10 poles, finishing fifth in the season standings and winning the Barry Sheene Medal, awarded to the sport’s best and fairest driver for the season.

“This is a great opportunity for me to join one of the most accomplished Supercar teams in history and, hopefully, we can continue to grow together,” McLaughlin said. “I want to thank two absolute motorsport legends in [team founder] Dick Johnson and Roger Penske for believing in me. I’m really excited about the future with the organization.”
