The Great Race with Toyota and RACER: Day 5
To celebrate 50 years of the Corolla, RACER has teamed up with Toyota to compete in the 2016 Hemmings Great Race with a first-generation 1970 Corolla sedan.
13-time X Games BMX Vert gold medal winner and SCORE Baja 1000 class winner Jamie Bestwick is the driver, while RACER's editor-in-chief Laurence Foster takes on navigating duties for the nine-day marathon.
Joining them on Day 5's route from Evanston to Cheyenne, Wy., is BMX Park rising star Drew Bezanson – and on a tough traverse of the mountains of Wyoming, the Canadian turns out to be a lucky charm for the Corolla's rookie crew.
Starting in San Rafael, Calif., June 18, and ending in Moline, Ill., June 26, the Great Race is for cars built before 1972. It takes in nearly 2,500 miles of America's most scenic highways and byways, passing Mount Rushmore and the Badlands on the way. Outright speed doesn't win the event – instead, each competitive section has to be completed in a pre-set time. Finish a section early or late and you'll earn time penalties, so every second really does count.
