The Great Race with Toyota and RACER: Day 3

To celebrate 50 years of the Corolla, RACER has teamed up with Toyota to compete in the 2016 Hemmings Great Race with a first-generation 1970 Corolla sedan. 13-time X Games BMX Vert gold medal winner and SCORE Baja 1000 class winner Jamie Bestwick is the driver, while RACER's editor-in-chief Laurence Foster takes on the navigating duties.

Joining them on Day 3's route from Reno to Elko, Nev., was two-time Team USA Olympic snowboarder and five-time X Games SuperPipe medalist Elena Hight.

Starting in San Rafael, Calif., June 18, and ending in Moline, Ill., June 26, the Great Race is for cars built before 1972. It takes in nearly 2,500 miles of America's most scenic highways and byways, passing the Bonneville Salt Flats, Mount Rushmore and the Badlands on the way. Outright speed doesn't win the event – instead, each competitive section has to be completed in a pre-set time. Finish a section early or late and you'll earn time penalties, so every second really does count.

Each day of the 2016 Hemmings Great Race we'll be bringing you a video postcard from the road. Catch the latest episodes at
