INDY 500: Kimball changes car number

A few months ago Charlie Kimball got a new product in his daily fight with Type 1 diabetes, so he's decided to change numbers for the 100th Indianapolis 500 to honor the company that keeps him running as well as paying tribute to owner Chip Ganassi.

Kimball will carry No. 42 instead of his usual No. 83 on May 29 and that number is symbolic for a number of reasons. It's the one Ganassi carried in the 1983 Indy 500 when he drove a car designed by Charlie's father, Gordon Kimball, and it's teammate Kyle Larson's number in Sprint Cup (Above: Larson was on hand in Indy with Kimball for the announcement). Plus, it also represents the period of time (42 hours) the basal insulin Tresiba controls his blood sugar.

"I started using Tresiba at Christmas and I only need to take it once a day," said Kimball, whose been sponsored by Novo Nordisk, the world leader in diabetes care, for six years with Ganassi in the Verizon IndyCar series. "It stays in your system for 42 hours and you can take it any time of the day, which is really beneficial with my schedule."

Diagnosed in 2007, Kimball scored a major victory for himself and the diabetes community by winning at Mid-Ohio and he finished third in last year's Indianapolis 500.
