INDYCAR: Power upset by qualifying mistakes
Will Power, IndyCar's modern king of pole positions, was kicking himself after another botched performance in qualifying ruined what could have been a front-row performance.
Team Penske's 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series champion has made a habit of throwing away his best laps this year, and after making another mistake during time trials for Saturday's Grand Prix of Indy, he vented ... on himself.
"It was just a mistake, I touched the wall turning into Turn 12," Power said of the contact that left his No. 12 Chevy 12th on the grid. "I was on a time that was good enough to get there, but locked up, went on the grass ... Every week I screw the [Firestone] Fast 6. Every week. Without foul. Obviously I'm quick in practice, [but] every week it's the same. Every week I screw up qualifying. It's really getting frustrating."
After earning the pole and win for last year's GP of Indy, Power watched as teammate Simon Pagenaud scored his second consecutive pole with ease. Facing a mid-pack starting position, Power seemed resigned to something other than a repeat win.
"The races never go yellow, so when you start back there you can't pass and so it makes it really tough," he added. "We'll do our best to claw back to some reasonable spot."
