MOTOGP: No 24th entry in 2017 field

The MotoGP field will not expand to 24 bikes in 2017, due to a "reluctance" from manufacturers to supply additional machinery.

In addition to KTM's two new entries, an expression of interest process for a potential 24th entrant was launched in March. Five teams signalled initial interest, with three of those then submitting formal applications to be considered by the FIM, IRTA and Dorna before the April 29 deadline.

A statement says that while "all three had merit and each, in slightly different ways, had elements that could enhance the MotoGP class", the supply of competitive bikes proved the sticking point. Due to a "reluctance amongst the existing manufacturers to commit to making additional equipment available, at least for 2017", a decision has been postponed to a "later season".

Moto2 squad Pons Racing, which also raced in MotoGP until 2005, had been considered the frontrunner for the 24th place.
