F1: Hamilton escapes incident with reprimand

Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has escaped with a reprimand from the Russian Grand Prix stewards for an incident in qualifying.

Hamilton was summoned to see the officials as he had rejoined incorrectly after going wide over the run-off area at Turn 2 early in Q1. Race direction had previously instructed drivers to keep to the left of a red and white polstyrene block in the run-off area before rejoining if they went off-track at that spot.
In-car camera footage showed Hamilton had not done so when he braked too late into the corner on an early qualifying run. After discussing the incident with Hamilton, the stewards, including ex-F1 driver and five-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Emanuele Pirro this week, ruled that it did not warrant anything beyond a reprimand.
As he was previously reprimanded for reversing in the Bahrain GP pitlane during qualifying, Hamilton can only afford one more such ruling before receiving a 10-place grid penalty.
Hamilton is only 10th on the Russian GP grid having been unable to participate in the pole shootout due to an MGU-H issue.
