F1: Ocon will get GP practice outings

Esteban Ocon will drive in some Formula 1 grand prix practice sessions for Renault this season as part of his role as reserve driver, Autosport has learned.

The GP3 champion will dovetail his F1 duties with a campaign in the DTM, racing for Mercedes squad ART Grand Prix. The practice sessions Ocon will take part in and whether he will replace Jolyon Palmer or Kevin Magnussen have yet to be decided.

It is also believed he will have the chance to drive the car during the in-season tests, which take place in Spain and Britain. In addition, the Frenchman will complete simulator work for the team throughout the year.

Ocon – who has retained a Mercedes F1 link, too – joined Renault this term, having followed up his European Formula 3 title in 2014 with victory in last year's GP3 Series. The team gave Palmer, who was reserve last season, the opportunity to drive in 13 practice sessions in 2015.

The Briton used Romain Grosjean's car each time and replaced him as a race driver this season after the Frenchman left for Haas.
