F3.5: Vaxiviere and Atoev join Spirit of Race
Matthieu Vaxiviere and 16-year-old Vladimir Atoev will race for Formula Renault 3.5 V8 newcomer Spirit of Race in 2016. The announcement was made by Russian bank SMP during an unveiling of its forthcoming racing sponsorship plans in Moscow.
Former Lotus Formula 1 junior driver and Formula Renault 3.5 runner-up Vaxiviere ensured Spirit of Race topped its first test at Jerez in October. The Frenchman was brought in to provide a benchmark for the team and assist its development.
Atoev finished second in SMP's North European Zone Formula 4 championship, having completed a first car racing season in French F4 the previous season.
Spirit of Race acquired its F3.5 V8 equipment from Draco, and the defunct Italian team's experienced personnel were running the cars during post-season testing.
SMP has previously sponsored Spirit of Race boss Antonio Ferrari's AF Corse sportscar team, which won the GTE Am class of this year's Le Mans 24 Hours in SMP colors.
