F1: Singapore GP threatened by smog warning

The Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix program is at present due to go ahead as planned, although organizers have warned the smoggy conditions are capable of altering hour by hour.

The three-day event at Marina Bay due to start on Friday is in doubt as the island state is currently shrouded by haze caused by the burning of forests in neighboring Indonesia, as farmers prepare their land for the agricultural season.

Over the past few days the air quality in Singapore – rated under a the Pollutant Standards Index [PSI] – has primarily been classed as "unhealthy", and occasionally rated as "very unhealthy." Numerous sporting events were cancelled last weekend due to the higher than normal PSI levels, which has resulted in speculation about the prospects of the race taking place.

For now, race officials declared themselves satisfied with the situation: "Based on the current PSI levels, there are no plans to amend the published racing and entertainment program," a statement from the organizers read. "The haze situation is highly changeable, not only from day to day, but from hour to hour. Therefore, it is currently not possible to reliably predict what the PSI level might be over the race weekend. We will continue to work closely with all the relevant government authorities to receive the best possible forecasts when they are available."

Organizers are also making sure they have plans in place to assist fans due to watch from the grandstands.

The statement added: "In order for our patrons to make informed decisions on the haze situation, the PSI reading and relevant health advisory will be displayed on the Singapore GP website, official Singapore GP mobile app, the giant screens between races and broadcast on the in-circuit radio system.

"The government health advisory will also be posted at all circuit park entrances. N95 masks will be available for patrons throughout the circuit park at cost price. All of our 24 medical and first aid posts have been placed on standby to handle any possible haze-related conditions."
