IndyCar: Kanaan and Dixon continue Iowa domination in FP2
Chip Ganassi Racing-Chevrolet took little time in stamping their authority over second practice at Iowa Speedway for tomorrow night’s Iowa Corn Indy 300. Tony Kanaan and Scott Dixon followed the same script they had used in the first session, and took just three laps to annex the top two times.
Both CGR pilots lapped the 0.875-mile oval in 181.2mph during a session that was stopped twice for track inspections, the latter concerning a weeper in Turn 4.
"With all this extra downforce I don't think new tires are going to make the difference they did a year ago when I got beat at the end," said Kanaan. "I think it's going to be a fun race and a tight race because we're all separated by a few tenths but starting up front will be big."
Added Dixon: "Obviously the whole Ganassi team is running well, all four cars in the Top 10, and I think we've got a good package for this place."
Behind them, Team Penske looked far more solid than in first practice, with Will Power, Simon Pagenaud, Juan Montoya and Helio Castroneves filling places 3-4-5-8. Power’s quickest lap was less than 0.4mph TK’s best – a huge improvement from earlier.
Charlie Kimball and Sage Karam put the other two Ganassi cars in sixth and 10th respectively, with Milwaukee winner Sebastien Bourdais seventh, and CFH Racing duo Ed Carpenter and Josef Newgarden ensuring Chevrolet held the top 11 slots.
Said Newgarden: "I think we'll be able to pass but it's going to be harder than last year. You don't get a push when you run up behind someone in the corner, the rear end really starts sliding and it's a real handful. But having said that I still think it's going to be a good race."
Andretti Autosport were top of the Honda runners, Ryan Hunter-Reay narrowly edging Justin Wilson and Marco Andretti.
Hunter-Reay commented: "I don't think it's going to be as good a race as it was last year, because it's just tough to get behind someone and get a run. And the Chevys are really stout coming off the corners so I think track position is really going to be key."
IndyCar next hits the track at 3pm local time (4pm ET) for qualifying, with race coverage on NBCSN beginning at 7pm local, and green flag at 7.50pm
