Acropolis Rally to go ahead
The historic Acropolis Rally will be held as scheduled this October, as part of the European Rally Championship, despite the current political and financial climate in Greece.
After decades on the World Rally Championship calendar, the rally joined the ERC schedule last year, as the Rally of Greece. To be the penultimate round of the 2015 season on October 9-11, the Greek Motorsport Federation (OMAE) has confirmed it will take place.
While it regains the traditional Acropolis Rally name, its format has been compressed, to ensure its survival and to allow planning for 2016 to begin.
"We have monitored the situation very carefully with OMAE and are delighted they confirmed the Acropolis Rally will happen, as it was originally planned since last WMSC of 2014," said ERC co-ordinator, Jean-Baptiste Ley.
Current ERC points leader Craig Breen won the 2014 rally in his Peugeot.
During its stint as a World Rally Championship event, the late Colin McRae dominated the Acropolis Rally. In seven WRC rallies between 1996 and 2002, McRae and co-driver Nicky Grist claimed five victories, one with Subaru and four in a Ford Focus.
