F1: Verstappen gets further penalty for engine change

Max Verstappen will serve a 15-place grid penalty for Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix after the Toro Rosso Formula 1 driver changed his engine for the fifth time to exceed his allocation.

The 17-year-old will serve a 10-place penalty for using a fifth Renault power unit plus a further five-place drop following his collision with Lotus driver Romain Grosjean in Monaco. If the full penalty cannot be applied, the remainder will be served in the form of a time penalty depending on the number of grid places untaken.

On Friday, Verstappen said Toro Rosso was considering changing the power unit ahead of qualifying, particularly as a power deficit on the straights looks set to compromise the team's weekend in Montreal.

"We are thinking about it," he said. "It will be a difficult race for us already so maybe it is a good opportunity to take the fifth engine."

Renault has suffered a number of reliability issues this season, which left Verstappen plus the Red Bulls of Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat on the fourth and final engine of their allocation coming to Montreal.

The French manufacturer's reliability has improved in recent races and Verstappen said he was "not worried" about his fourth engine getting through the weekend but the team has since chosen to make the change.

When asked how many engines he expects to use this season, with 13 races still remaining, Verstappen said, "Hopefully not more than six – but it will be hard.

"I still have three engines alive – only one was blown up. The others are still running so I can do some more mileage."
