UPDATED: Huertas out, Vautier in at Coyne for Indy 500

Tristan Vautier got James Davison into the 99th Indianapolis 500 but now he finds himself in the starting lineup as Davison's teammate.

In one of the most bizarre circumstances in Indianapolis Motor Speedway history, Vautier qualified Dale Coyne's No. 19 Dallara-Honda for Davison but will start Sunday's race in Coyne's No. 18 – replacing Carlos Huertas.

RACER.com learned of the driver change late Thursday night. On Friday, IndyCar medical consultant Dr. Terry Trammell said that the Colombian was suffering from an inner ear condition. Huertas will have to undergo further medical evaluation before being cleared to return to competition.

Vautier, the 25-year-old Frenchman who finished 16th in his only previous Indy start in 2013, was asked to qualify for Davison, who was racing in the Pirelli World Challenge series in Canada. The 2012 Indy Lights champion did an excellent job with an average speed of 223.747mph (21st overall) and was supposed to drive sports cars in England this weekend.

Huertas, the surprise winner at Houston a year ago, also did a nice job with a run of 224.233mph, which was 18th best of the 33 cars.

It's not known whether a driver has ever qualified one car and started in another.

The last row now has two drivers who didn't qualify (Ryan Briscoe and James Davison) and another (Vautier) that qualified someone else's car.

And Bryan Clauson has already moved up three spots without turning a wheel.
