Porsche launches new GT3 for 2016
Porsche has unveiled the new 991-shape 911 GT3 racer that will come on stream for next season. The new 911 GT3 R, which replaces the exiting 997-model of the same nomenclature, was launched on Friday at the Nurburgring ahead of this weekend's 24 Hours at the German track.
The car is built around the roadgoing GT3 RS, which means it is powered by the direct-injection four-litre flat-six engine unlike the GTE class 911 RSR.
Porsche has worked to optimize the center of gravity to create more balanced weight distribution to make the car handle more predictably. This includes the adoption of the central radiator position of the GTE car, which also means the cooling system is better protected in the event of front-end collision.
The roof, front bodywork, doors and tail section are all produced out of carbon-composites in the name of weight saving.
The latest 911 GT3 R is priced at 429,000 euros ($488,000) and deliveries to customers are due to begin in December ahead of the 2016 season.
