F1: Sainz says upgraded Toro Rosso a big step

Toro Rosso has made a big step forward in downforce levels with its revised 2015 Formula 1 car, reckons Carlos Sainz Jr.

Technical director James Key said the version of the STR10 being used at Barcelona this week was "almost completely brand new" compared to the car run in testing so far. Sainz said the gains were immediately obvious.

"It felt different, it felt really good to be honest," he told reporters. "That's why I want to congratulate all the guys back at the factory for the great job they have done because out of the box I already felt it is a step forward, a more complete package.

"I always say the first impression for a driver is very important, and my first impression when I started pushing was really good. It's pure downforce, pure overall grip and better car balance. Having consistent car balance through corners helps."

Toro Rosso lost some running to a Renault engine problem in the afternoon, but Sainz was also impressed with how quickly the car was back on track, as he completed 86 laps.

"We thought we would not manage to get out for the rest of the day, but the team did a wonderful job to get it back out," he said. "It was a bit of surprise. I was thinking we would not be going out but I managed to do two clean runs at the end."
