Formula E: London Battersea double-header approved

The London Formula E event has been given the final go-ahead by the local council and will be a two-day double-header meeting.

Planning permission for the Formula E event to take place in Battersea Park on June 27-28 was granted by Wandsworth Council last night. The approval will allow Formula E to run two races at one of its meetings for the first time.

Formula E boss Alejandro Agag said that he was "delighted to be awarded planning approval" and thanked Wandsworth Council, London Mayor Boris Johnson and local stakeholder groups.

"Having two races in London – the final two of the season – was an option we discussed at length with Wandsworth Council and means that London could well be where the inaugural champion is crowned, making it a fantastic spectacle for the city and a great platform to showcase sustainable mobility and clean energy," he said.

Permission has been granted to turn the riverside park's perimeter roads into a Formula E race circuit measuring 1.81 miles).

The approval covers works to widen sections of the road and to resurface a car park and the boules court, which will be the sites of two of the chicanes on the 15-turn track. Preparation works will begin in the park next month.

Confirmation that the London Formula E finale will be a double-header event means that the inaugural 2014-'15 Formula E series will run to 13 races after the addition of a race on the streets of Moscow in June.
