WEC: Mark Webber involved in scary crash at Brazil

Factory Porsche LMP1 driver Mark Webber was involved in a massive shunt with approximately 30 minutes left in the FIA World Endurance Championship finale at Interlagos in Brazil.

The Aussie's No. 20 Porsche 919 Hybrid appeared to have a wheel or tire issue and spun in front of the No. 90 8 Star Motorsports Ferrari F458 piloted by Matteo Cressoni, causing the No. 20 to strike the barriers on the right side of the track leading onto the front straight before sliding across the circuit and hitting the inside barrier.

With the spinning Porsche coming across the front of his Ferrari and nowhere to go, Cressoni followed Webber into the right-side wall during Webber's initial impact. What appears to be a tire carcass is seen flying off of Webber's car (BELOW) just prior impact; the right rear wheel also appears to be missing its tire before the Porsche's first strike.

The rear of the prototype was turned 90 degrees to the rest of the chassis after the initial blow with the most extensive damage taking place behind the cockpit. A small fire briefly broke out at the back of the V4-turbo powered Porsche and was quickly extinguished.

Cressoni emerged from his car and rested against the barrier while Webber was extracted from his Porsche and placed on a stretcher.

Webber waved to the crowd and gave a thumbs up before being loaded into the ambulance. The FIA confirmed Webber was alert and awake after being received at the infield care center.

The latest update on both drivers involves the pair staying overnight at the hospital.

Details on Webber's condition are sparse

, but Porsche was able to confirm "The initial information the team received from the medical center at the track was that he was not badly injured. However, he has been transferred to a hospital in São Paul for further checks."

Cressoni did take to Twitter, however, and wrote: "Thanks all guys! I will stay in the hospital tonight but everything seems ok."
