PWC: Series adds Detroit to 2015 schedule

The Detroit Grand Prix will see a packed schedule of racing expand next year with the return of the Pirelli World Challenge series. PWC released

its 2015 schedule on October 17

while negotiations with continued with DGP, and just last week, the organizers confirmed the Verizon IndyCar Series doubleheader will headline the May 29-31, which opened the door for more announcements.

"We are very excited that the Verizon IndyCar Series will compete as the only doubleheader in the 2015 race schedule," DGP event chairman Bud Denker told RACER. "The Chevy Dual in Detroit presented by Quicken Loans is so important to our event from a sponsor and fan perspective. With the TUDOR Series and Stadium Super Truck Series both confirmed for our event weekend, we await Pirelli World Challenge Series' decision to attend our great event, which is so important to the continued development of our city and state. We thank our sponsors, the racing series and our fans who are supporting us and giving back to the revitalization and renovation of Belle Isle Park."

With DGP and PWC having reached an agreement for the series to maintain its place on the schedule, PWC president and CEO Scott Bove says vigilant work by both sides has allowed its popular GT machinery to race in front of the Motor City fan base.

"We had been working with the DGP staff for several months to sort through some issues that were important to the series," Bove noted. "We released what was to be the final schedule a few weeks back. The response from our fans, teams, drivers and marketing partners has been overwhelming in support of us continuing the negotiations with the track. Those discussions were re-kindled, and over the past two weeks we have mutually agreed to add the DGP to our schedule."

Like IndyCar's doubleheader on Detroit's Belle Isle, PWC will also hold two rounds of racing on the street circuit.

"The event will be a double race for GT/GTA classes," Bove confirmed. "The Sunday race will be a 90-minute live TV broadcast with our new TV partner to be announced soon. The purse will be a record purse for the GT field. More marketing details on this event will follow."
