F1: Magnussen hit with grid penalty
Kevin Magnussen will have a five-place grid penalty at the Russian Grand Prix following a gearbox failure on his Formula 1 car in final practice.
The McLaren driver stopped on track early in the session after appearing to clip new bumps that had been put in place overnight at Turn 2. After his car was returned to the pits, McLaren discovered that his problem was caused by a gearbox failure, so he will need a new unit fitted to his car for qualifying.
Magnussen is not the only driver facing a move down the order after qualifying, with Nico Hulkenberg having a similar gearbox penalty. Pastor Maldonado will get put back five places as well as the result of a new engine that was fitted to his car in Japan.
