Marussia’s GP3 sister team Manor has withdrawn from this weekend’s round of the championship in Russia for commercial reasons.
The team, currently running Dean Stoneman, Patrick Kujala and Ryan Cullen, is fifth in the standings and has claimed three victories this year, including the preceding race at Monza with Stoneman. It said a decision on whether it will take part in the final event of the season in Abu Dhabi will be taken in due course.
Manor made it clear its withdrawal had nothing to do with Marussia Formula 1 driver Jules Bianchi’s serious accident during the Japanese Grand Prix last weekend and had been decided prior to the events of Suzuka.
“Marussia Manor Racing GP3 would like to make clear that its non-participation in the Sochi event is for purely commercial reasons and these have not been influenced in any way by events at last weekend’s Formula 1 race in Suzuka,” a statement said. “The team’s GP3 freight deadline was last Thursday, October 2.”
