IndyCar drops double-file restarts

IndyCar has dropped double-file restarts for the rest of the 2014 season.

Previously, the series had stipulated double-file restarts for all oval races other than the Indianapolis 500, with single-file restarts to be used on road and street courses. However on the eve of the race at Texas – the first race of the season where double-file restarts would have been employed – the series issued a bulletin confirming the change.

IndyCar President of Competition and Operations Derrick Walker said that the modification was intended to limit the potential for some drivers to be unfairly disadvantaged.

"This year we've made improvements in our ability to monitor and police restarts that has resulted in great single-file restarts at all of our events, including the Indianapolis 500," Walker said. "We also felt it was important to place our competitors in the exact running order as they were prior to the caution and not provide an advantage to some drivers because of the lane they were in during a double-file restart."
