IndyCar: Series fines Chevy, warns Team Penske
IndyCar handed down a pair of interesting penalties Monday for the No. 3 Chevy driven to third place by Helio Castroneves during Saturday's Grand Prix of Indianapolis.
Chevy was fined $20,000 and lost 10 points from its Manufacturers' Championship tally for violating Rule 11.2, Torque Control, which states: "The only means by which the driver may control the engine torque is via a single chassis-mounted foot pedal or on-board fuel mixture switch. Designs which allow specific points along the pedal travel range to be identified by the driver or to assist in holding a position are not permitted. The minimum and maximum pedal travel positions must correspond to the engine throttle minimum (normal idle) and maximum open positions."
The most eye-catching penalty is for running afoul of Rule 12.1, Traction Control, which states: "Traction or launch control is not permitted. (Anti-stall routines are permitted for the sole use of preventing engine stoppage)."
This is the first known instance of both violations since the series moved to its new 2.2-liter turbocharged V6 format in 2012. Traction Control has been a touchy subject in the past, with manufacturers and drivers often accusing their rivals of having the technology secretly enabled.
