Le Mans: Tandy to Manthey Porsche team

British Porsche driver Nick Tandy will join the factory-backed Manthey squad for what will be only his second appearance at the Le Mans 24 Hours in June.

The 29-year-old and Richard Lietz will move across from Porsche’s TUDOR United SportsCar Championship squad to join the two full-season World Endurance Championship GTE Pro lineups for Le Mans and, by way of preparation, the series opener at Silverstone.

Frederic Makowiecki, Marco Holzer, Jorg Bergmeister and Patrick Pilet were confirmed as the WEC drivers at Tuesday’s Geneva motor show, along with Tandy and Lietz’s participation at Le Mans.

The driving combinations for the two cars have yet to be announced, but it is widely expected that Bergmeister and Pilet will remain together and that Porsche newcomer Makowiecki will join forces with Holzer in the other car.

Tandy, who raced for the privateer Felbermayr-Proton team at Le Mans in 2011, would likely join Makowiecki and Holzer for Le Mans and Silverstone, with Lietz teaming up with Bergmeister and Pilet.

“If you are driving for Porsche in North America, the only thing missing is Le Mans, so this means I have the best of both worlds,” Tandy said. “I love racing in America and it is great to compete at Le Mans, because you get the chance to win the biggest sports car race in the world.”

Tandy revealed that he is aiming to win the quadruple crown of sports car racing in GTE over the remainder of this year. He won the GT Le Mans class together with Lietz and Pilet in the USC-opening Daytona 24 Hours in January.

“I’m holding two with Petit Le Mans [won with the Falken Tire/Walker Racing team last October] and the Daytona 24 Hours, so now I need to win Sebring and Le Mans,” he explained.

Porsche is using the Silverstone WEC round in April as its Le Mans warm-up because the Spa event the following month clashs with the IMSA race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
