Newly recruited Red Bull junior Pierre Gasly believes he can fight for the Formula Renault 3.5 championship in his rookie season with Arden Motorsport.

The Formula Renault Eurocup champion’s deal was confirmed on Wednesday, and he will be looking to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors Robin Frijns and Stoffel Vandoorne, who both starred in their rookie FR3.5 seasons after winning the Eurocup title.

Frijns won the FR3.5 crown in 2012, while Vandoorne won his debut race in the category and then finished as runner-up in the series to Kevin Magnussen this year. Gasly, who replaces Antonio Felix da Costa in Arden’s Red Bull-backed car for next year, believes it is realistic to keep that trend going.

“For next year I think that the goal is clear,” he said. “I have seen from this year and previous seasons that it is possible to do a good job in the first season so the goal is to win the championship. I will have to work hard during this winter but I am very motivated and I think it is possible with Arden.”

Gasly has already tested with Arden this winter, and the team expects him to be a contender at the front in 2014.

“From what we saw on the day he did testing with us, we were really impressed,” Arden team boss Julian Rouse said. “He’s definitely got the potential to be right at the front in his first year.

“He’s got a good attitude toward everything, he’s really focused, really open-minded and I think there is some quite clear talent there.”
