Robb gets Formula E test with Lola

IndyCar series driver Sting Ray Robb is testing with the Lola Yamaha Formula E team this week as the team assesses its driver options for the upcoming season.

The team, which is taking its operation in-house this season after two years aligned with the championship-winning Abt operation, is on the lookout for two new drivers after Lucas di Grassi’s retirement and Zane Maloney’s surprise switch to Nissan.

First reported by FE Notebook and later confirmed by RACER sources, Robb is driving Lola’s GEN4 car at a test in Spain this week. It’s unclear whether he is in the frame for one of Lola’s two available race seats, but Robb could bring a budget to any prospective seat – something not exactly commonplace in Formula E, but an advantage nonetheless. 

Robb’s outing follows a similar one for Dan Ticktum – who is out of contract at Cupra Kiro and currently looking to secure a seat on the grid – last month. Two-time race winner Ticktum, however, is said to be under consideration elsewhere on the grid too

After winning the 2020 Indy Pro 200 championship, Robb went on to finish second in Indy Lights two years later. But three years in IndyCar didn't yield similar levels of success, with a best championship finish of 20th in 2024, and a best race result of ninth at WWTR that same year and again at Long Beach in 2025. He raced for Juncos Hollinger Racing last season but with that team expected to retain Rinus VeeKay and sign Caio Collet, he is thought to be out of the frame there.

Aside from Lola, Mahindra, Porsche and the new Porsche-supported team, and the recently-announced Fortescue Zero team are all yet to confirm a single driver for the upcoming season. Porsche, however is unlikely to deviate from its incumbent pairing of Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Mueller, while Fortescue Zero will likely keep hold of Taylor Barnard who drove for the team in its previous incarnation of DS Penske.

In its two seasons in Formula E so far, Lola has finished bottom of the standings, although it entered the series mid-way through a homologation cycle, putting it on the back foot from the start. Nevertheless, it managed a podium in just its fifth race when di Grassi finished fifth at Homestead Miami Speedway last year. This year it added a maiden victory – again courtesy of di Grassi – in Shanghai, making Lola the only brand to have won races in every major open wheel series.
