Radical Cup to crown champions in front of FIA WEC

After five rounds and a summer's worth of racing from Sebring to Sonoma, Road America to Road Atlanta and Lime Rock Park, the 2026 Radical Cup North America season comes down to one final weekend.

Round 6 – the championship-deciding season finale – will be contested September 4-6 at the legendary Circuit of the Americas (COTA), where a 35-car, four-class field will share the stage with the world's best endurance racers as part of the FIA World Endurance Championship's visit to Texas. It's a fitting final act for a series that prides itself on developing talent capable of racing anywhere in the world, and with titles still unresolved in every class, there's no shortage of storylines heading into the weekend.

The closest class title fight is in the Pro 1340 class, where Mike D’Ambrose and Nico Balkissoon are separated by just 20 points. Jonas Axboe heads into the weekend 107 ahead of Luke Kendall in Pro 1500, while Chris Huhn (Gold) and Robert Rossi (Platinum) are comfortably in front in their respective classes. However, all eyes will be on each of the class points leaders as they fight for the Outright Series Champion’s trophy, with Axboe just 26 clear of Huhn, and Rossi only 13 further back.

PRO 1340: Will experience or youth prevail?

Series stalwart Mike D’Ambrose had been nearly unbeatable behind the wheel of his No.60 Team Stradale early in the year. He opened the season with a clean sweep at Sebring and repeated the feat at Road America before adding another pair of wins at Road Atlanta in July.

However, a driver nearly four times his junior, Nico Balkissoon (Williams Services / Tiger Fight) broke through for his maiden win at Road Atlanta in tricky wet conditions, becoming the series’ youngest-ever winner. Three more wins at Lime Rock put Balkissoon just 20 points behind D’Ambrose and make him one of the class's must-watch talents heading into Texas, as well as a contender for Rookie of the Year.

The rest of the six-car field is stacked with its own storylines: Ryan George and Mike Dardin both fly the Crown Racing with Radical Arizona banner. Dermot Ennis brings his Ennis Racing entry, backed by Sol-R-Skin Roof Underlayments and Eagle, down from Canada, while Kenny Naill rounds out the class in his Radical Indianapolis GRP car, sponsored by Naill Services.

PRO 1500: Axboe tantalizingly close, Valour teammates to tussle

The Pro 1500 title fight has largely been a two-driver affair between two young-guns using Radical Cup as a catalyst in their careers– Jonas Axboe (Radical Northwest Cameron Racing) and Luke Kendall (Valour).

The scoreboard simply doesn’t show just how close this fight has been. Axboe has a staggering 12 wins, while Kendall is yet to break through. Kendall’s title dream, while a long shot, isn’t quite over yet, but now he has to watch for teammate Jack Yang to eclipse him in the standings. Crucially, Yang has proven he knows how to win, having taken to the top step at both Road America and Lime Rock. Also chasing points in the class are Rookie of the Year hopefuls Sam McDougall (Group-A Radical New York) and Josh Holtz (Crown with Radical Arizona), Valen Venkatesh (Cameron Racing) and Nick Pearson (Radical Indianapolis GRP).

GOLD: Huhn expected to show why he’s a world champ

The Gold class has been highly competitive this year, and with 12 cars COTA will be no exception. While Mike Anzaldi (RYNO Racing) won two of three races in his return to the series at Road America, Huhn has recorded clean sweeps at both Sebring, Road Atlanta and Lime Rock on his way to dominate the class with 12 wins.

The question now is whether he can wrap up the championship with another trifecta, given the depth of the COTA field. Radical Cup Europe, UK and Gulf competitor Andy Lowe (Primal Motorsports) has flown in from Great Britain. Australian Richard McDougall, father of Sam, joins second in the standings Dennis Kelly and Reid Stewart from the Group-A Radical New York stable. Texan team DDautosport brings local knowledge in Ross Wolf and Lucian Pancea, while Radical Indianapolis Graham Rahal Performance driver David Mason looks to consolidate third in the standings.

Sonoma race winner Joe Nuxoll represents Radical Northwest Cameron Racing while father of Pro 1340 sensation Nico Balkissoon, Omar, hopes to give his Williams Services / Tiger Fight team additional podiums. Perhaps though, Huhn’s biggest challenger comes in the form of former Le Mans driver Chris McMurry, who famously finished runner up to Suellio Almeida for the 2024 Pro 1340 title.

PLATINUM: Rossi, Jenks and reigning champ Williams set for a finale showdown

The Platinum class has been fiercely fought all year, with seven different drivers finishing on the podium. However, the common thread has been series returnee Robert Rossi (Giant Racing), who has taken wins at every venue this year, and commands an insurmountable lead in the championship heading into COTA.

But the question is, who will take final bragging rights? Will it be reigning champ Wayne Williams (ONE Motorsports) who is yet to take a win this season, or Group-A Radical New York’s Steve Jenks who took two wins at Road America? Perhaps it will be Texan Judd Miller (DDautosports), the class champ in 2019, or long time Radical racer Alain Derzie (One Motorsports), or relative new-commers David Ullstrom and Dan Decker (Radical Northwest Cameron Racing). It’s an all-star cast for the season finale.
