‘Days of Thunder 2’ coming in 2028

Tom Cruise made it official Saturday afternoon that a second “Days of Thunder” movie is coming in the summer of 2028.

Cruise posted a picture on his official social media accounts of himself and co-star Anne Hathaway standing next to the recognizable yellow-and-green car from the first movie. It was taken at Daytona International Speedway, where Cruise and Hathaway are reported to be in attendance ahead of Saturday night’s race.

Hathaway will join Cruise in the sequel, which will be produced by Paramount Pictures. The release date, per Cruise’s post, is June 2, 2028.

Cruise will return as Cole Trickle, the character from the first movie. “Days of Thunder” was released in 1990, directed by Tony Scott and featured Cruise as Trickle, bursting onto the NASCAR scene with immense talent that those around him needed to harness for stock car success. In the process, he traded blows with his fellow competitors.

It also took from the life of NASCAR crew chief Harry Hyde. Harry Hogge, played by Robert Duvall and Trickle's mentor, was modeled after Hyde.

Story details for the second movie have not been confirmed and neither has Hathaway’s role. Deadline and Variety report that she is expected to play a team owner and engineer.

Cruise will produce the movie along with Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper. Bruckheimer also worked on the original “Days of Thunder” movie.
